Abstract
Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is a global health problem that continues to increase, particularly in the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) phase. Hemodialysis is the primary therapy to maintain patient survival; however, in clinical practice, patient adherence to hemodialysis therapy remains a significant challenge. Non-adherence to hemodialysis can lead to acute complications, increase the risk of hospitalization and mortality, and reduce patients’ quality of life. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing hemodialysis patient adherence is essential. Objective: This scoping review aims to map and identify factors influencing adherence to hemodialysis therapy among patients with chronic kidney disease. Methods: This study employed a scoping review approach based on the Arksey and O’Malley framework. Literature searches were conducted across several electronic databases, including PubMed, Wiley, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Included articles were published within the last ten years, available in full text, and utilized qualitative and quantitative research designs. The article selection process followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Results: A total of six articles meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed in this scoping review. The findings indicate that factors influencing hemodialysis patient adherence are multidimensional, including psychological factors, social factors and family support, individual and demographic factors, educational factors, patients’ knowledge and perceptions, as well as contextual and situational factors. Conclusion: Adherence among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis is influenced by various interrelated factors. A comprehensive care approach through patient education, psychological support, and family involvement should be considered in nursing practice and health care services to improve hemodialysis patient adherence and prevent further complications.
